Dayot Upamecano's Man United transfer statement that could affect Arsenal's summer plans

Dayot Upamecano previously claimed that he is set on a move to one of Europe's biggest clubs, including Manchester United.

The RB Leipzig centre-back has established himself as one of the most highly-rated young defenders on the continent after several excellent seasons in the Bundesliga.

Upamecano also starred for Julian Nagelsmann's side in their Champions League last-16 thumping of Tottenham last month.

As reported by football.london, the France Under-21 international has been on Arsenal's radar for quite some time.

Arsenal behind the scenes on the impact on transfers this summer and the next great creative midfielder

The Gunners are interested in bringing him to the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season, and despite the defender's asking price standing at a hefty £70m last summer, this is likely to drop given his contract at Leipzig expires at the end of next season.

Arsenal are likely to face competition for the 21-year-old, with Bayern Munich, Manchester City and recently, Real Madrid, also linked with a summer move.

And the youngster has spoken in the past about his desire to one day play at the Bernabeu - or Arsenal's Premier League rivals Manchester United.

“When you’re young, you dream of Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United,” he told TF1 ’s ‘Telefoot’ programme, two years ago.

“But to get there, you have to work.

“I’m proud of myself, very happy. I have to continue in this manner. Then I can look higher.

"For the moment, my preference is Leipzig. After that, we’ll see.”

Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche recently admitted that he hoped Upamecano would choose to commit his future to the club and sign a new deal, amid the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is a far-reaching decision for a player," he told Kicker.

"He should take his time with that. He has to be clear about exactly what he is going to do, how he sees his future.

“Maybe that has changed a bit as a result of the new situation [coronavirus].”
