Dayot Upamecano could copy Timo Werner transfer route amid Arsenal and Man United links

Red Bull Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has delivered an intriguing update on the future of Arsenal transfer target Dayot Upamecano.

The Gunners have been linked with signing the defender this summer, while Manchester United have also been involved in plenty of speculation.

It's almost certain that the 21-year-old will leave for pastures new sooner rather than later but it appears as though this summer will not be the time.

Mintzlaff is confident the defender will sign a new contract that will stop him leaving for a free transfer next season.

Mikel Arteta on Thomas Partey and transfer plans

With sides around Europe unlikely to be able to stump up the £54 million release clause amid the coronavirus disruption this season, the Leipzig CEO is expecting Upamecano to leave the German side next summer.

In much the same way as Timo Werner is leaving the Bundesliga club to secure a move to Chelsea after signing a new deal, Upamecano could head to the Premier League in a similar way.

"I assume that he [Upamecano] will also play for us next season," Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff told Kicker.

"We are in good talks to find a solution to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer next year.

"It worked out with Timo Werner, and I assume that we will do our homework with regard to Dayot as well."
