Thugs armed with knives and a hammers carried out a terrifying daylight robbery in one of south Liverpool's most popular spots.
A cash box was stolen from a security guard by the robbers outside the Co-op store on Lark Lane at around 10am today.
The two males left the scene in a black BMW which travelled up Lark Lane in the direction of Sefton Park .
The guard was not injured during the incident but was left shaken by his ordeal.
The damaged cash box was recovered in Byles Street in Toxteth .
Eyewitnesses told the ECHO that they saw the men jump out of the BMW and head inside with the weapons clearly in view.
An investigation was launched with CCTV enquiries being carried out in the local area.
The area outside the Co-op store remained cordoned off by police for several hours following the incident.
According to witnesses, the incident was over in a matter of minutes, and involved masked men armed with meat cleavers arriving at the store in a BMW.
Detective Inspector Phil Mahon said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Lark Lane this morning who saw what happened or anyone who saw the black BMW 1 Series car in the area either before or after the robbery to get in touch.
"I would also ask anyone who thinks they may have captured the car on dash-cam footage to contact us as they may have information which is vital to our investigation."
