Day of the Dogs annual festival is a beautiful thing

It's a week filled with adoration and love, with one days especially dedicated to dogs and a community's celebration of them.

The Nepalese festival Kukur Tihar started on November 3 and will last until November 7 and during this time dogs are worshipped, bathed and decorated with red tilaka .

They have flower garlands draped around their necks and they are offered tasty food including meat, milk, eggs, and dog food.

And the celebration is not just reserved for family dogs, working police dogs, security detail and stray and street dogs are honoured equally too.

Kukur Tihar celebrates the relationship between dogs and humans and Hindus believe it is a sin to show disrespect to a dog during the festival.

Why is Kukur Tihar celebrated?

Hindus believe that the dog is the messenger of Yamaraj - the God of death.

The dogs are given special treats (Teamdogs)

By keeping the dogs in good health and giving them loving attention, they will be able to appease Yamaraj.

All dogs are blessed with tilaka, a red mark applied to their forehead and a significant element in Hinduism.

What day is Kukur Tihar?

There are five days during Tihar, and they don’t all just celebrate dogs.

Feeling cherished (Teamdogs)

Day one is all about the celebration of crows and ravens, who are believed to be messengers of the death God Yamarag.

Day two is dedicated to dogs and took place on the November 3 this year, it's generally celebrated around October or November every year.

Day three focuses on the sacred cow and day four sees the worship of the ox.

The fifth and final day is all about worshipping each other and marking a special bond.
