Day of misery for Metro users after overhead line damage caused widespread disruption

Commuters faced a day of misery after a large section of the Metro network ground to a halt.

Overhead line damage resulted in trains being suspended between Benton and St James throughout Monday , with passengers later told the disruption would last into Tuesday.

Trains were initially stopped between Benton and Tynemouth stations just after 9am after around 500 metres of wires cames down near Monkseaton, North Tyneside.

But a second line collapsed which led to trains being cancelled to St James.

Passengers stuck on a train in the Walkergate area were asked to get off the train and walk back to Walkergate station.

Engineers were called to fix the damage, but operator Nexus warned users to brace for widespread disruption until Tuesday.

Customer services director at Nexus Huw Lewis said: "I’m sorry for the disruption caused to our customers.  Two sections of overhead line have come down and the damage is significant.

"Our engineering teams are going to work around the clock to get this work carried out as quickly as possible so that Metro services can be restored in the affected area."

Engineers were set to work through the night to fix the "significant" damage but there was not known what time the network would be fully up and running by.

A total of 600 metres of Metro’s overhead line has come down between Palmersville and West Monkseaton, causing damage to masts in the area.

A 500 metre section of overhead line is also down at Chillingham Road.

Tickets were being accepted on a replacement bus service between Four Lane Ends and North Shields and local bus services and extra staff have been deployed to station.
