Day back as Olympic coach embraces selection headaches

Former W-League centre-back Stacey Day is likely to get some minutes in Newcastle Herald Women's Premier League this weekend and Newcastle Olympic coach Harmonie Attwill will welcome the prospect of having selection headaches in coming weeks.

Day, who was integral to New Lambton's 2019 premiership-championship double, joined Olympic last year but had limited game time due to injury.

The experienced central defender has been managing a knee injury this year and has made just one appearance so far, off the bench against Adamstown in round seven. She has been unavailable since but comes back into calculations as Olympic prepare to play Mid Coast in Taree on Sunday.

The defending champions have lost centre-back Sophie O'Brien to a season-ending Achilles injury and Attwill is still working out a new back-line combination.

Danielle Nicol has done a good job in two appearances in the centre of defence and new recruit Jorjia Hogg started there last Sunday when Nicol was unavailable for the 7-2 win over New Lambton. It was Hogg's first appearance since joining Olympic from Adamstown.

"Jorjia played with Jess Evans at the back and did well," Attwill said. "She's a tactically sound player. She's really good on the ball technically. Her passing distribution is good.

"There's definitely still some areas that we need to work on in terms of combinations at the back and, at the end of the day, New Lambton scored two goals, which I'm not happy about."
