It's the beginning of a new year and healthy eating is top of most people's to-do list. A number of places in the city have popped up that not only provide healthy and nutritious eating but also tasty and delicious food. To those who doubt that delicious healthy eating exits, Makai Açaí & Superfood Bar will put an end to the naysayers.
While the aptly dubbed "superfood bar" has only been operating for about a year, Makai has been supplying açaí to a number of places in the city for 2.5 years. In fact, they're the first ones to bring the "superfruit" to Thai shores. Makai Açaí & Superfood Bar has four locations in the Big Mango: Ari 4, Sukhumvit 23, Silom Connect and Siam Paragon. Their Siam Paragon branch is on the G Floor on the north side of the mall.
Makai offers you three main choices: the Makai original blend is açaí blended with banana and strawberry; Makai signature blend is when a selection has its unique blend; and finally ignore their pre-made selections in a rousing surge of freedom and choose to customise your own bowl.
I tried the Tropical Thunder (B160 for regular, B230 for large), which was under the Makai original blend. This was topped off with mango, pumpkin seeds, shredded coconut and granola. Definitely the choice if you want your açaí with mango. If you're looking for something a little more fruity, look no further than the Makai signature blend Tickle my berries (B360), a sweet and sour mix of banana, goji berry, blueberry and strawberry with granola for crunch and topped off with a drizzle of honey. My favourite is the Butter my coco-nuts (B360) because not only are fresh fruits like kiwi, strawberry and banana present with a smattering of crunchy bits, there's also a healthy helping of Makai's homemade peanut butter, which was addictive. The peanut butter is so popular that they have been asked to sell it separately!
Fair warning: the Makai signature blend is pretty sizable. Don't underestimate açaí -- it can be a healthy snack or dessert and be filling. If you're the breakfast-at-home kinda person, then grab a pack of organic açaí berry for B300 and Makai gives you recipes to try out, too! If you're not into bowls, get the Popeye's açaí (B160) smoothie, which even tastes like dessert thanks to the vanilla in it.
Makai Açaí & Superfood Bar is doing its best to bring this superfruit into the forefront of Bangkokians' radar. Their Paragon location is frequented by celebrities and social media influencers, which is helping. One thing's for sure: a visit to Makai Açaí & Superfood Bar is a sure-fire way to obliterate whatever assumptions you had on health food and will make you want to come back for more. g
