Dawn O’Porter quits Twitter and gives her account to Choose Love charity

Dawn O’Porter has revealed that she plans to “get off Twitter for the foreseeable future” and hand her account over to Choose Love, the charity she co-founded.

The writer and presenter, 41, said that the social media site was “not doing my head any good at all” and explained that she would be giving her platform to the organisation, which helps raise money for refugees around the world.

“As you know, a number of years ago I was one of the team who founded the charity Help Refugees, now known as @Chooselove,” she wrote.

“Unthinkable things are happening in this world right now, things that we cannot ignore any longer. I am extremely passionate about this cause and urge you to take notice, if you haven’t already.

“Rather than this Twitter feed laying idol [sic] while I am not using it, I am donating it to @ChooseLove to help them reach as many people about this crisis as possible.”

She urged her followers to “please unfollow now” if her account’s new purpose “will annoy/upset or offend you in any way,” adding: “I ask you kindly not to follow if it will result in you sending any unsupportive messages to a team of people who work tirelessly to save lives across the world.”

She said that she was “not sure when [she’ll] get back” on Twitter but confirmed that she will still post on her Instagram account “because I like posting pictures of myself and getting compliments.”

She signed off with: “Sending love to you and yours, and please… #BEKIND.”

O’Porter’s statement comes after she criticised celebrities who shared private messages from her close friend Caroline Flack after she died last month.

Piers Morgan and Flack’s ex-boyfriend Danny Cipriani both posted screenshots of messages sent to them by the former Love Island presenter on social media.

“Can we all just agree that posting Caroline’s personal texts is a massive betrayal?” O’Porter wrote on Twitter.

“Please consider that if for some reason you are thinking of doing it. She’d absolutely hate it.”
