Davy Nelson to take charge of Meath ladies footballers

Davy Nelson will be confirmed as the new Meath ladies football manager next week.

Meath LGFA confirmed today that Nelson is the choice to take over from Eamonn Murray, who has guided the team to unprecedented success as they claimed the last two All-Ireland senior titles and a National League crown this year having only emerged from the intermediate grade in 2020.

Nelson, whose name will be put before the county board for ratification next Monday night, has considerable experience on the men’s club circuit having guided Navan O’Mahonys to four county titles to go with the six that he won with them as a player.

He also enjoyed success in Monaghan with Latton O’Rahillys, winning a county title back in 2008 and county chairman Colm McManus said that Nelson will bring “an unrivalled mix of passion and conviction to the table”.

It’s an onerous task that Nelson is taking on with Meath having shed three of their best players after retaining this year’s All-Ireland as Vikki Wall and Orlaith Lally joined AFLW clubs while Emma Troy has gone travelling, though there is still some optimism that they may still play a part for Meath next year.

Eugene Eivers and Paul Garrigan, key members of Murray’s management team, were snapped up by new men’s boss Colm O’Rourke, though it appears there will be some continuity under Nelson with Mark Brennan expected to remain on as a coach.

Nelson commented: “It’s a great honour for me, my family and club Navan O’Mahonys to take on the role of manager of the double All-Ireland champions.

“It is an exciting time for Meath ladies football and I’m looking forward to being involved with such an impressive group.

“It’s a daunting task following in the footsteps of the highly successful previous management but I gladly accept the challenge of playing my part in keeping Meath at the top table.”

Meanwhile, former Tipperary captain Brendan Maher will be part of Johnny Kelly’s backroom team with the Offaly hurlers.

Kelly managed a Maher-inspired Borris-Ileigh as the club went all the way to the 2020 All-Ireland final and he has now brought the 33-year-old on board in Offaly as a performance coach.

His older brother, Martin, had already been drafted in by Kelly as a coach as Offaly bid to win promotion back to the top flight of the Allianz League and from the Joe McDonagh Cup in 2023.
