Davy Fitzgerald will decide on Wexford future in 'the next day or two’

Davy Fitzgerald will decide on his Wexford future in 'the next day or two’ - but insists he has not been approached about the vacant Galway job.

The 48-year-old led Wexford to a first Leinster title since 2014 this season before defeat came to Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final.

But after three years making the long commute from his Sixmilebridge home in Clare, speculation has been rife that Fitzgerald may leave the Yellowbellies.

And bookmakers Paddy Power have since suspended betting on him taking over the vacant Galway hurling job.

Asked about taking the potential of taking over Galway, he told Midwest Radio: "Listen, I’ve to decide whether I’m staying in Wexford or not – that’s the most important question.

"I have to get my own mind sorted and I’ll be doing that very soon. Very soon would be in the next day or two.

"My heart is torn unreal there for the last number of weeks. I think people appreciate that it’s a massive long drive for me down to Wexford; it’s probably two and a half to three hours down and the same back three or four nights a week.

"I have a very special bunch of boys down there and that’s why it has taken me so long (to decide)."

The Galway job may be attractive to Fitzgerald given its proximity from his Clare home.

But Fitzgerald - who has also managed his native Clare and Waterford - insisted that he has had no contact with the Tribesemen.

He said: "The one thing I will tell you is I haven’t talked to one person from Galway County Board."
