Davy Fitzgerald says online abuse can 'cut people to shreds' in warning of dangers it poses

Davy Fitzgerald said that online abuse can 'cut people to shreds' in a warning of the dangers posed by anonymous trolls.

The Wexford hurling manager and RTE star has long warned of the impact of cyber bullying and online abuse, particularly aimed at GAA players and coaches.

The Clare native recently appeared on the Late Late Show and opened up on the abuse he and his father have suffered in recent years.

And although admitting that everyone is entitled to opinions, but hit out at people who 'cut the back off' someone behind anonymous social media accounts.

He told RTE: "I often hear the freedom of speech defence and that's fine. Everyone's entitled to their opinion.

"But I just don't think you're entitled to cut the back off someone, especially being anonymous online.

"That really bugs me that you think you can just sit behind a keyboard and absolutely just cut people to shreds when you don't really know them or what their whole story is.

"You shouldn't be judging anyone else. We're all different individuals. We all have our ups and our downs and our good points and bad points.

"I don't think it's for anyone to judge another person."

Late Late Show viewers commended Fitzgerald for bravely hitting out at internet trolls over online abuse aimed at himself and his father earlier this month.

The Wexford manager believes that online bullying aimed at players and coaches is one of the biggest threats facing the GAA today.

And in a brave interview, he described the abuse he and his father have faced in recent years and the effect it has had on his family.

One viewer said: "Well done Davy Fitz for speaking out against online bullying".

Another added: "Watching Davy Fitz on the Late Late Show is absolutely breaking my heart. The abuse he & his family suffered online has been one of the most horrible things I’ve witnessed and for a long time".

"Davy Fitz is a class act," a viewer said.

"Well done Davy Fitz! A very powerful interview. "
