Davy Fitzgerald confirms he is staying on as Wexford hurling boss

Wexford have received a huge boost with the news that Davy Fitzgerald is to stay on as senior hurling manager.

It was anticipated that the Clare man would quit the role after three years in charge in the wake of the heartbreaking All-Ireland semi-final loss to Tipperary this year but after much deliberation, he has signed up for another two years.

The decision also kills recent speculation linking Fitzgerald to the vacant Galway manager’s job though he insisted that his head wasn’t turned at any stage.

“This was never about a choice between Wexford and another county,” he told independent.ie.

“It would have broken my heart to walk away from these Wexford players and, in the end, I just couldn’t do that. The problem I’ve always had is that the journey to Wexford is an absolute killer.

“I was actually going to give up after two years only the players came to my house, appealing for me to give it another year.”

Fitzgerald led Wexford to their first Leinster title in 15 years during the summer, making him the first manager in hurling history to complete the clean sweep of major honours having previously won League and All-Ireland titles while in charge of Clare and a Munster Championship with Waterford.

He guided Wexford to promotion from Division 1B in his first season in 2017 and they’ve remained in the top flight in each of the last two seasons.
