Hackers targeted the website of the so-called 'Davos in the Desert' conference to show a distressing image of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The website, bearing information about Saudi Arabia’s Future Investment Initiative, was briefly hacked.
It showed a mocked-up picture of the Washington Post journalist about to be beheaded by the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. The site was subsequently taken down completely.
Underneath the shocking image, a message read: “For the sake of security of children worldwide, we urge all countries to put sanction on the Saudi regime”.
The image was shared widely on social media following the hack, with thousands of people grabbing screenshots of it.
The 'Davos in the Desert' conference is a major investment conference which starts in Riyadh on Tuesday. Several global corporations have announced they will not attend since the death of Mr Khashoggi, including Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan and Uber.
Coming nearly three weeks after the journalist’s disappearance, the Saudi response to the scandal has been met with scepticism, with President Trump saying: “Their stories are all over the place.”
According to sources in Turkey, Mr Khashoggi was killed by a team of agents inside the consulate. Eighteen men have been arrested by the Saudis in connection with the killing.
