Trump at Davos LIVE: US President says he 'won't use force' to take Greenland as he addresses world leaders

Donald Trump is addressing world leaders and business chiefs at Davos - as tensions flare over his threats to take control of Greenland.

The US President’s speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland comes after he doubled down on his insistence that America needed to acquire the island.

Meanwhile Sir Keir Starmer told MPs at Wednesday's Prime Minister's Questions that he is “not going yield” to pressure from the US President on Greenland.

Trump has threatened to slap tariffs on allies objecting to his plans to annex the territory.

Trump says 'we'll see what happens' with Greenland

15:19 , Megan Howe

Trump says "we'll see what happens" over Greenland and that the US could "make it impossible for the bad guys to do anything against the perceived good ones".

The US president said: "It's a big piece of ice, and it's very important... that we use it for national security. That can create a power that will make it impossible for the bad guys to do anything against the perceived good ones.

He added: "We'll see what happens" as he again claimed Nato had treated the US "very unfairly".

Trump appears to confuse Greenland with Iceland

14:55 , Megan Howe

Donald Trump appeared to confuse Greenland with Iceland when he discussed the impact the crisis had on the US stock market.

He said: "Our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland, so Iceland has already cost us a lot of money."

Trump to Greenland: 'Say yes, we'll be appreciative. Say no, we will remember'

14:32 , Megan Howe

Trump has said he will not use “excessive force” to take control of Greenland.

Addressing Greenland directly he says: "You can say yes, and we'll be very appreciative, or you can say no and we will remember.”

"A strong and secure America means a strong NATO," he added.

Trump claims US 'should have kept' control of Greenland after WWII

14:24 , Megan Howe

In a slight nuance to his previously stated reasons for wanting Greenland, Trump has said the US had a claim on the island due to its efforts to defend it during World War Two after Denmark was invaded by Germany.

"We already had it, but we returned it to Denmark after World War Two," he said.

The US "should have kept it," he said.

Trump 'won't use force' he claims

14:15 , Megan Howe

“I don’t have to use force, I don’t want to use force, I won’t use force,” Trump says.

He claims the US would be “unstoppable” if there were to use “excessive force” to acquire Greenland.

Trump has now taken aim at NATO.

Greenland matters for national security, he says

14:10 , Megan Howe

Trump said he is seeking “immediate negotiations” to acquire Greenland, which he says is needed for national security.

He claims the US acquisition of Greenland would not be a threat to NATO, but rather would enhance the alliance’s security.

'Only the US can defend Greenland,' Trump says

14:05 , Megan Howe

Trump has spoken of wanting “a strong and united West.”

“They [Europe] have to get out of the culture they’ve created over the last 10 years[...]we want strong allies not seriously weakened ones,” he says.

Trump has started speaking about Greenland now.

He said: "I was going to leave it out of the speech, but I think I would have been reviewed very negatively."

“I have tremendous respect for the people and Greenland and Denmark but every NATO ally has an obligation to defend their own territory,” he said.

Trump says the US is the only “great power” who can defend Greenland.

13:40 , Georgia Bell

Rachel Reeves has confirmed that the “special relationship” between the UK and the US is still alive and well despite the ongoing Greenland dispute.

The Chancellor was asked if there was “anything left of the special relationship” by ITV News, to which she responded, “there absolutely is.”

“And there’s no more special relationship on military, on strategic issues, than the relationship between the US and the UK,” she went on.

“And that is one of the reasons why last year we were able to secure for Britain the first and the best trade deal with the United States, and that has real, tangible benefits.”

She also added that she did not “accept” that the relationship was falling apart.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Trump expressed optimism that an agreement on Greenland could be reached.

He said, "I think we will work something out where NATO is going to be very happy and where we're going to be very happy.

Rachel Reeves: 'Britain is not here to be buffeted around'

11:40 , Michael Howie

Rachel Reeves has defended Sir Keir Starmer's attempts to cool tensions over Greenland, saying the UK will not be pushed around by Donald Trump's tariff threats.

The US president has threatened to slap a 10% tariff on imports from the UK and other European allies opposed to his efforts to annex the Danish territory.

The Chancellor said the UK had an economic plan which would "get us through challenging times" and the trade deal with the US would not be "undone".

She was speaking at Davos, where Trump is due to make a major speech later.

Ms Reeves told Sky News: “Britain is not here to be buffeted around. We've got an economic plan, and it is the right one for our country.

“If other countries want to increase trade barriers, that is their choice, but we are determined to bring trade barriers down which is why this week I'm meeting with European, Gulf partners, Canadians to talk about how we can free up trade and make it easier for businesses to trade around the world.

“And on President Trump, we worked last year to get a trade deal. And as the US commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick said when I saw him yesterday, he doesn't see any reason why that trade deal should be undone.”

Sir Keir is not attending the Davos gathering but other world leaders on the receiving end of Trump's tariff threats and criticism have used the forum to speak out against his actions and threaten economic retaliation.
