Davis Love III caddying for son in US Open

ERIN, Wis. _ Davis Love III has a pretty nice golf resume: 1997 PGA champion, two-time Ryder Cup captain, 21-time winner on the PGA Tour.

And now, U.S. Open caddie.

Love is hauling the bag this week for his son, Davis Love IV. He goes by the nickname "Dru," short for quadruple.

Love III, who has played in 23 U.S. Opens, called the experience "weird." For one, he's allowed to wear shorts. Two, he can't eat in family dining.

"The caddies are giving me a hard time," he said with a grin Tuesday. "But it will be a lot of fun."

Dru Love's college career at Alabama was stunted by injuries, but the giant (6-foot-5, listed at 210 pounds) certainly has the length to survive at Erin Hills.

"I can't club him because he hits it so far," Love III said. "I just tell him: 'Yardage is 175, you want to land it 170; it's playing 163. Pick a club.'

"And then he hits a wedge."

Dru made the field by shooting 67-69 at a sectional qualifier in Georgia, chipping in for eagle on the 36th hole and then winning a playoff to be the first alternate.

He got the call Monday after five spots reserved for late qualifiers via the world rankings went unfilled.

"It's really nice to be here," Dru said, "and to have my dad guide me through it."
