Davis Love III and Zach Johnson named as US Ryder Cup captains

Davis Love III and Zach Johnson have been selected to serve as US vice-captains at the 2020 Ryder Cup.

The duo were chosen by Steve Stricker, who will captain the American team as they look to win back the trophy from their European rivals on home soil at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin in September.

2018 USA skipper Jim Furyk had already been announced as a vice-captain last year.

Like Furyk, Hall of Famer Love has previous experience as a Ryder Cup captain, having led his country during their landslide win at Hazeltine National in 2016.

He was also in charge when Europe famously overturned a 10-4 deficit to complete a stunning final-day comeback dubbed the 'The Miracle of Medinah' in 2012.

Two-time Major winner Johnson, meanwhile, was part of the US's Ryder Cup teams in 2006, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.

Europe will be captained at the 2020 Ryder Cup by Padraig Harrington, who has thus far named Robert Karlsson and Luke Donald as his vice-captains.

The competition remains scheduled to take place between 22-27 September despite the sporting calendar being decimated due to coronavirus, though several top players - including Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka - have stated their preference for it to be postponed until 2021 rather than take place without fans in attendance.

The PGA Tour is set to resume in June, while a revised calendar has seen the Masters rescheduled for November and the US PGA Championship and US Open moved to August and September respectively.

The 2020 Open, meanwhile, was cancelled altogether for the first time since World World Two amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
