Great Britain, the Davis Cup champions, will travel to Belgrade for their quarter-final against Serbia a week after Wimbledon – giving Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic a chance to do battle for their respective national teams.

It will be played at the 6,100-seat Tasmajdan Stadium in the middle of the capital, on clay, on 15-17 July. Murray, the world No2, has committed to playing, while Djokovic will almost certainly play in his home city even though the world No1 also has serious ambitions on the hard courts of Rio at the Olympics in August.

The only time Great Britain and Serbia have been in the competition, at Braehead Arena, Glasgow, 10 years ago, Djokovic won both his singles rubbers in a 3-2 victory, with Andy Murray losing in the doubles with Greg Rusekski.

Several thousand British fans travelled to Ghent in November last year – at the height of a security alert after the Paris terrorist attacks – when Great Britain defeated Belgium to lift the cup for the first time in 79 years. The team began their defence of the title impressively in Birmingham last month when they defeated Japan.

The Lawn Tennis Association said: “Information for Great Britain fans wanting to attend the tie will be released in due course once details are received from the host nation.”

Great Britain’s captain, Leon Smith, said: “Now we know the surface and venue our preparations for the Serbia tie can go to the next level. It’s going to be an exciting contest in Belgrade and we can’t wait to get back together as a team and continue our defence of the title.”
