Davis Cup 2019: Andy Murray absent again as Great Britain beat Germany to reach semi-finals

Andy Murray was left out once again as Great Britain sealed their spot in the Davis Cup semi-finals with a win over Germany.

The 32-year-old admitted on Thursday he was "not in the best shape" to compete, missing their group clash against Kazakhstan in Madrid.

And the Scot was overlooked in their quarter-final clash, with Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans selected for the singles matches, while Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski represented the doubles.

Edmund eased past Philip Kohlschreiber in the opening match with a 6-3, 7-5 success against the German veteran, who is ranked 79th in the world.

Evans was handed a tougher test on paper against the world no. 35, Jan-Lennard Struff - who is ranked seven places higher than him - although the Briton won their only previous meeting at Wimbledon in 2016.

The 29-year-old edged the first-set tiebreak before Struff fought back to win the second 6-3 and force a decider.

Evans battled hard in the final set before getting the better of his German opponent in the final set tiebreak to seal Britain's victory.

They will face the Argentina or Spain in the semi-finals, with Rafael Nadal's victory over Diego Schwartzman levelling the tie at 1-1 and forcing the deciding doubles match.
