Davis calls for another gear against City

Jets co-captain Cassidy Davis was wary of wounded Melbourne City as Newcastle looked to back up their second win of the season with another against the struggling defending champions on Sunday.

City are second-last on four points with only three rounds remaining in W-League and are coming off a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Western Sydney (13) at Frank Holohan Reserve on Thursday night.

Newcastle, seventh on seven points, cannot make the finals either but moved three points ahead of City and six clear of the bottom of the table with a dominant 4-0 win over last-placed Perth in Perth on Monday night.

But Davis said the result would count for nothing if the Jets could not back it up in Melbourne this weekend. Newcastle then face in-form Canberra, who are fifth with 15 points, and second-placed Brisbane (19).

"We've got to finish this season on a high and we can't just say that we beat Wanderers and we beat Perth," Davis said.

"We need to beat those top teams and keep going with it. I don't think anyone wants to settle for two wins and seven points, so we need to take momentum into our last couple of games and try to get a result against those top teams.

"City are a team we've struggled against in the past, so it won't be a light game at all. They've definitely got some good players. Alex Chidiac has been dangerous for them and you give those kind of players a little sniff and they take advantage of it. So we definitely need to be on our game this weekend."

Newcastle's win in Perth was built on desperation, aggression and ruthlessness.

"In a team meeting in Perth we said we're not playing just because," Davis said. "Yes, we can't make the semis but we're still playing because we're playing for each other, our fans, our members, the club, and we're playing to not get the wooden spoon.

"There were a lot of factors that came into that game against Perth and we knew it was a must-win to get further up the table and to keep our confidence growing. We've got to keep going with it now and we've got to go to another level."

The match at Kingston Heath kicks off at 4.05pm.
