Davinson Sanchez scouting report: A tough day at the office for Spurs' makeshift right-back

Davinson Sanchez found himself in the unfamiliar role of right-back as Tottenham took on Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday.

It was a move from Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino that surprised everyone with the big 23-year-old Colombian taking his place on the right rather than in the centre of a back two or three.

Natural right-back Serge Aurier was left unused on the bench as Sanchez was given a chance in the new role.

We kept a close eye on the defender throughout the encounter as Spurs drew 2-2 with the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium.

Here are his highlights and lowlights as well as our verdict on his performance and what Pochettino told us about the Colombian afterwards.

0-15 minutes

His first touch was cushioning down Hugo Lloris' chipped pass with his chest but he then booted his ball down the line out of play.

Sanchez was then caught out by a clever Aubameyang backheel moments later. Moussa Sissoko was helping him out in the early stages as Arsenal concentrated their attacks down that side.

He did well on 14 minutes to marshall Aubameyang during one Arsenal attack, using his strength to hold him off before passing to Toby Alderweireld to clear.

16-30

The Colombian lost the ball down the right while trying to dribble past Matteo Guendouzi and then fouled the Arsenal man after he played the ball on.

He had less to deal with in this period as Spurs were on the front foot at the other end.

31-45

Sanchez dealt well with Pepe who tried to get on to a cross to the back post but didn't get much on his clearance, trying to knock it off the winger and into touch but failing to do so.

He gave the ball away on 35 minutes and just before the break struggled to stop Aubameyang, leaving the covering Sissoko to have to commit a foul on the edge of the Spurs box and it was that phase of the game which ended with Arsenal grabbing a goal back.

45-60

The Colombian continued in the role for the second half and dealt well with one early Arsenal attack in the opening period.

However on 55 minutes he lofted a ball across his own half to Lacazette on the edge of the Spurs box who took a long shot at goal, which sailed just wide.

61-75

Sanchez started this period with a good bit of play to dispossess Aubameyang.

He then used his strength on 69 minutes to wrestle Mkhitaryan off the ball as the Arsenal substitute looked to get down his flank in what was a better period for the Colombian.

76-90

However, he started this period by giving away a foul after an awkward tumble into Ceballos.

On 84 minutes he presented Mkhitaryan with a chance after heading the ball up and into the air rather than away on the edge of the Spurs box.

Sanchez then made a late important challenge to stop an Arsenal attack in the final moments.

Verdict

Davinson Sanchez did not have a great game. He did improve in the second half but it wasn't pretty to watch. That was not so much his fault.

The big Colombian centre was playing out of position as a right-back because Pochettino had no interest in playing his only fit right-back - Serge Aurier - who the club will accept suitable bids for on Monday should any come in before the foreign transfer windows close.

Sanchez is just not built to be a full-back. He doesn't have the skill-set. He doesn't have great decision making in possession, can panic with the ball at his feet and on the few occasions he attempted to dribble forward he took the ball too far with a heavy touch and lost it.

Pochettino believes Sanchez can become one of the world's best defenders and if he does it will be as a centre-back, not as a full-back.

football.london asked Pochettino after the game about his decision to play the Colombian on the right and what he thought of his performance. Predictably he backed his man and went in completely the other direction.

"His performance was great. I think, Hugo (Lloris), him, Harry Winks and Christian Eriksen were on the top of the performance," he said. "Then the rest of the team were fantastic too.

"He is fast, it was difficult to face with space to control Aubameyang. If it wasn’t Aubameyang it was Lacazette or Pepe.

"We were watching games from him when he was at Atlético Nacional, in Colombia, that he played on the right or on the left and it was not strange for him that situation or position. I think it was a very good solution for the team and I happy because his performance was great."

Pochettino will always protect his players, not least Sanchez, but it's fair to say the Colombian was not the only struggling full-back.
