Davide Zappacosta to Roma: Loan details, option to buy, shirt number and new Chelsea contract

Davide Zappacosta's Chelsea exit was confirmed this week.

The Italian becomes the third high-profile defender to depart Stamford Bridge this summer as former captain Gary Cahill joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer and David Luiz made the shock £8m move to London rivals Arsenal.

Zappacosta arrived in west London almost two years ago to the date in a £23m transfer from Torino, but failed to hold down a regular place in the team under Antonio Conte as well as Maurizio Sarri.

Clearly not part of new head coach Frank Lampard's plans for the new season, a change of scenery is just what the 27-year-old needs to get his career back on track.

With that said, here's all the details regarding his loan move to AS Roma.

Loan details

Zappacosta had joined Roma initially on loan for six months with an option to extend the deal until the end of the season.

A statement via the club's official website reads: "AS Roma are pleased to confirm the signing of Davide Zappacosta from Chelsea on a temporary deal. Zappacosta joins the Giallorossi from the English club on an initial six-month loan which runs until January 2020.

"As part of the deal, there is the option to extend the loan until 30 June 2020.

Shirt number

Zappacosta will wear the No. 2 shirt at Roma.

The shirt number was made vacant following Rick Karsdorp's loan move to Feyenoord earlier in the month and has been worn by the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Brazil legend Cafu in the past.

New Chelsea contract

Before sealing his move to Roma, Zappacosta extended his contract with Chelsea by a further year.

"Davide Zappacosta has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Chelsea and moved to Roma on loan until the end of January," a statement reads.

"Zappacosta's 12-month extension takes his contract at Chelsea through to June 2022. Good luck in Rome, Davide!"

What has Zappacosta said

The defender is looking forward to a new challenge back in Italy.

"I am pleased to join Roma, after an experience overseas that helped me progress as both a player and a person," he said. "Being able to play for a great club like this is a huge motivation.

"I cannot wait to start training."

He also had a message for Chelsea fans.

"It's been a big honour to be part of the Chelsea Family," he tweeted. "I wish all the very best to this incredible club.

"Thanks for everything!"
