CHICAGO _ After two-and-a-half seasons on the disabled list, David Wright is on the cusp of a return to the major leagues.
The Mets transferred Wright's minor-league rehab assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, a source said. Tuesday marks the start of Las Vegas' season-ending, seven-game homestand, its final week as a Mets affiliate.
The bump up the minors ladder represents progress for Wright, whose 20-day rehab window ends Friday. Rosters expand to 40 players on Saturday.
Manager Mickey Callaway hinted Monday at a possible move when he said Wright had "not yet" left High-A St. Lucie. Wright played four games in a five-day stretch, but took Sunday and Monday off.
"He just didn't feel comfortable playing three in a row at this point, so he's going to get a couple of days off, then we're going to re-evaluate where he's at physically," Callaway said.
In 10 games with St. Lucie, Wright hit .188 (6-for-32) with a .235 OBP and .219 slugging percentage. He had six strikeouts, two walks and one extra-base hit (a double). He played a full nine innings at third base only once.
Wright hasn't played for the Mets since May 27, 2016, enduring neck, shoulder and back surgeries since.
