David Wotherspoon in St Johnstone injury scare as midfielder suffers blow during comeback

St Johnstone's David Wotherspoon has suffered an injury scare on his comeback for the club.

The midfielder was hurt in a bounce game against Falkirk on Tuesday and is currently being assessed by the Perthshire side. The 32-year-old had previously been forced to the sidelines since last November due to a knee injury and has recently been edging closer to his first team return.

However, his comeback in now in doubt after Tuesday's clash with The Bairns. It comes ahead of St Johnstone 's trip to Tannadice to take on Liam Fox's Dundee United as domestic football returns in Scotland. It is a huge week for the Saints as they squeeze in three Premiership games in seven days. Ninth in the standings, Callum Davidson’s men then head for Kilmarnock next Wednesday before hosting champions Celtic in a Saturday lunchtime TV clash, but they may have to do so without the option of Wotherspoon.

Canada World Cup hopeful Wotherspoon hasn’t been ruled out of those matches. But manager Davidson reported: “Spoony picked up a knock in the closed-doors game – nothing to do with his knee - so we’ll assess him over the next couple of days.

“We don’t know if he’ll be available on Saturday yet. It’s big week coming up and it’s important we have as many fit and ready to play as possible.”

Tony Gallacher, who hasn’t played since April, featured for the full bounce match win as Aberdeen loanee Connor McLennan stepped up his bid for match sharpness.

“Tony played another 90 minutes, which was great,” said Davidson. “Connor scored a hat-trick and Theo (Bair) got a goal again as well. I asked them both if they wanted to play and they were really keen to. They’re scoring goals and putting pressure on me to pick them.

“The competition for the forward line is something we haven’t had for a while, which is really pleasing.”
