David Wotherspoon a step closer to World Cup dream with Canada

St Johnstone midfielder David Wotherspoon is a step closer to his World Cup dream.

The 31-year-old helped Canada advance to the second round of qualifiers for Qatar 2022 following a 4-0 win against Suriname - whose ranks included Nigel Hasselbaink - on Tuesday.

A hat-trick from Lille forward Jonathan David and a tidy finish from Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies did the damage.

Wotherspoon entered the action as a late substitute but had started in the previous 7-0 group win over Aruba at the weekend.

Having topped Group B Canada now move on to a head-to-head series against Haiti, with the ties taking place on June 12 and June 15.

And if successful they qualify for the ‘Octagonal’ where three teams will advance to Qatar. The fourth-place team will play an intercontinental playoff.

Wotherspoon, who qualifies to play for Canada through his mother Sheila, has impressed national boss John Herdman since first joining the set-up back in 2018.

He is riding on the crest of a wave having recently played a starring role in Saints’ season of success and has been receiving plenty of congratulatory messages from team-mates on his cup double-winning heroics with the Perth club.

The Perthshire Advertiser spoke to Wotherspoon earlier this week. See Friday’s PA.
