David Weir targeted by Hearts as Ann Budge wants Jambos hero as director of football

Ann Budge is considering a move to make former Hearts cup hero Davie Weir the club’s new director of football.

The Tynecastle chief, hard on the heels of bringing Robbie Neilson back to Tynecastle as first team coach, is understood to be interested in handing Weir the role of overseeing their football operation.

The 50-year-old’s most recent role has been as pathway development manager at Brighton, looking after the Premier League club’s loaned players, but Weir also has extensive experience as Mark Warburton’s assistant manager at Rangers and Nottingham Forest.

A return to Hearts, where he won the Scottish Cup in 1998 and played more than 100 games, would be hugely tempting.

Weir declined to comment last night but Record Sport understands he is the man Budge wants to work with Neilson. The Rangers legend was linked with a return in November 2019 after Levein's exit.

Meanwhile, Budge insists outgoing Jambos boss Daniel Stendel would have been a success at Tynecastle if the coronavirus hadn’t ended the season early.

She said: “He made a big impact on our operation and we are much better for having had his services. Had it not been for Covid-19, I’ve no doubt Daniel would have had a very successful and enjoyable time.”
