David Weir reveals Rangers priority between 'invincible' season and more trophies

Davie Weir insists Rangers must prioritise more trophies rather then going unbeaten for the rest of the season.

Steven Gerrard ’s side were crowned Scottish Premiership champions today after Celtic failed to beat Dundee United at Tannadice.

The Ibrox side have yet to be defeated in the league this season and are could match the Celtic team of 2016/17 and go the campaign unbeaten.

But Weir has urged his former club to forget about that and focus on adding more silverware to the cabinet.

He said: “Personally for me it’s about trophies and trying to win as many as you can.

“Europe gives them the opportunity to do that and the Scottish Cup is ongoing as well so that’s potentially on the horizon.

“Unbeaten seasons and things are nice footnotes, but that’s not what it’s all about. It’s about winning trophies and being successful so that would be my priority.

“But who knows? It’ll be a shooter-term focus on the next game and that will be the priority, which is obviously Thursday.”

Weir was part of the Walter Smith team that reached the UEFA Cup final in 2008, losing 2-0 to Zenit St Petersburg.

The Gers face Slavia Prague in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie this week, and Weir sees no reason why they can’t emulate him and his teammates.

He told BBC Scotland: “They’re definitely capable. There’s a lot of good teams left but Rangers have shown that they can beat good teams and can be competitive against good teams so it’s all to play for.

“There’s 16 teams left but I don’t think there’s any standout candidates. Some you'd think are stronger than others.

“We weren’t the strongest team, or seemed to be the strongest team in 2008 when we got to the final so there’s no reason for Rangers not to do that.

“They’re a really tough team to play against and capable of beating anyone as they’ve shown recently, so why not?”
