David Weir on why he fancies Rangers chances of title and the moment which points to mentality shift

David Weir has explained why he fancies Rangers' chances of title glory this season.

The former Ibrox captain says the reaction to the weekend's Old Firm victory tells him that there's been a mentality shift at his old club.

Rangers' celebrations were muted in the wake of their 2-0 win against Celtic, and Weir believes they are taking care not to get carried away with the result.

In an interview with the Daily Record, he said: "Yes I do fancy their chances this season. I think it will be close and the European factor will have an impact. But I think the Rangers squad is in a really good place right now.

"Time will tell how Celtic react. Sometimes getting a slap in the face provides that stimulus to get better.

"But what’s really interested me has been the way Rangers have reacted after the win. It’s been very low key with none of the players getting over excited on social media.

“They’ve learned from what happened last December when maybe they were guilty of getting carried away. It’s much more business like this time and I like that. I think it’s promising."

Weir believes the experience Rangers have from last season will only help them throughout this campaign.

He added: “Celtic will be wounded. They were missing a lot of players, they weren’t at their best and they will come back.

“But Rangers are in a much better place now in terms of being able to deal with that. They’ve got a stability about them and more of a belief in what they are doing.

“They are learning what it takes. You don’t just come together one summer and then win a league. It doesn’t work like that.

“You have to learn how to win one. You have to learn from your mistakes along the way. It looks to me that Rangers have learned those lessons. There’s still a long way to go but it looks really promising.”
