David Weir is plodding his way to the start line of a 22ndLondon Marathon and has no intention of it being his last.
The eight-time winner, runner-up last year, will again be among the leading protagonists in the men’s wheelchair race on Sunday.
But despite turning 42 earlier this year, he still has unfinished business in his home city. He said: “I just love the race. It’s where I started as an eight-year-old doing the mini marathons. I don’t think many have done 22 marathons in a row.
“I’ve been lucky with injuries and I may be at the back end of my career at the minute but I’m motivated and I think I’m still third in the rankings. I’ll just keep plodding along until I feel like I can’t any more.”
It is arguably the strongest field of all Sunday’s respective marathon class with Weir up against defending champion Brent Lakatos, previous winner Daniel Romanchuk and one of the dominant forces of wheelchair racing, Marcel Hug.
Rating his chances, Weir said: “Daniel and Marcel at the minute are on another level and from another universe at the moment. It’s going to be tough on Sunday but I like challenges and pushing myself to the limit.”
