David Warner suffers comical run out as England make late breakthrough on chastening day

Australia opener David Warner was run out in comical fashion on day three of the second Ashes Test after a mix-up with Marcus Harris.

Having looked relatively untroubled while sharing a partnership of 41 runs, there was a major breakdown in communication which cost Warner his wicket.

With Joe Root bowling, Harris prodded him into the offside and set off for a quick single.

However, Warner was late in responding to the call and the pair both ended up at the same end as Stuart Broad threw the ball in to Jos Buttler.

Buttler then calmly removed the bails, sending Warner packing for just 13.

Speaking on commentary for Fox Cricket, Adam Gilchrist said: "Trouble for Australia's opening partnership.

"Harris was looking to take a cheeky little single, Warner just got confused. There was a miscommunication and England have a breakthrough."

Despite picking up the wicket of Warner, it was a chastening day for Root's side, who collapsed from 150-2 to 236 all out.

After Root and Dawid Malan had provided a small glimmer of hope for England fans by putting on a 138-run partnership, England collapsed in an all-too familiar fashion.

Root was dismissed for 62 by Cameron Green, while Malan fell soon after to Mitchell Starc for 80.

Ollie Pope continued his struggles against spin as Nathan Lyon got him caught for five, while Jos Buttler was out for a 15-ball duck after a working over from Starc.

Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes offered some resistance for England, making 34 and 24 respectively, but they ended getting bowled for 236.

Despite being able to enforce the follow-on, Australia opted to bat again and they made it through to the close of play on 45-1.

England are trailing by 282 runs and Australia going 2-0 up in the series appears inevitable.
