David Walliams makes savage dig at Simon Cowell and questions Amanda Holden's promotion

David Walliams made a savage dig at Simon Cowell as the Britain's Got Talent semi-finals kicked off on Saturday and also poked fun at Amanda Holden's new promoted role.

The show faced another chaos this year due to the coronavirus pandemic but then came another blow when head judge Simon had to pull out from the semis due to breaking his back in a biking accident near his LA home.

While Simon recovers, David, Amanda, fellow judge Alesha Dixon and stand-in Ashley Banjo filmed the recorded semi-finals and David couldn't resist getting a jab in at his expense.

After introducing Ashley, BGT hosts Ant and Dec asked David: "How are you going to manage without your Simon?" to which he swiftly responded "Simon who?"

He added: "We've got Ashley Banjo filling Simon's slot and he's going to do an amazing job.

"I mean what does Simon Cowell do? He just says no to people, anyone can do that?!"

After speculation this week, Ant and Dec also confirmed on screen that Amanda is the show's new head judge in Simon's absence to which David shouted: "What?!" before adding: "it should be the nation's favourite judge," in reference to the fact that he's won that title at the National Television Awards on a number of occasions.
