David Walliams makes dig at Simon Cowell as he gives Britain's Got Talent update

David Walliams gave an update on the return of Britain's Got Talent, but couldn't miss the chance to make a sly dig at his co-judge Simon Cowell.

The show was put on hold last year due to coronavirus restrictions, but the comedian has confirmed that it will continue as normal for 2022, and auditions will be due to take place early next year.

David appeared on ITV's morning show, Lorraine, where he said: "We're booked in to do the auditions in January."

But he couldn't announce the good news without making a joke about his friend, as he added: "So I will see Simon then. He didn't come to my birthday, he didn't send me a card or a present or anything.

"He likes to keep me hanging I think. He knows I love him even more when he treats me cruelly."

When the show was cancelled this year, the children's author quipped that he was going to miss the money.

He said: "I'm definitely going to miss the show. It's a shame but I understand the reasons.

"We can't do the show as usual, we need the audience. It is a shame but we will be back bigger and better next year!"

Last season, Simon couldn't appear on the show due to a severe back injury, so Diversity's Ashley Banjo took his place instead.

When asked whether he would prefer having the Diversity dancer as a co-star than Simon, David said: "Well, we could start on time, which would be nice.

"I mean, the thing with Simon is, there's a lot to tease him about, whereas Ashley is so perfect, it's hard to make a joke about him."

Britain's Got Talent will return in 2022 on ITV.
