David Walliams confirms 'Little Britain 2' plans are underway with Matt Lucas

David Walliams has confirmed that work has started on a new programme which will be like Little Britain.

The comedian revealed that he has been working on a new sketch show alongside Matt Lucas, with a host of new characters in the pipeline.

However, the show is likely to be far less controversial than Little Britain which first aired in 2003.

The 49-year-old tells The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday: "Me and Matt are meeting up and talking about projects.

"We just have an idea of something we want to do.

"The idea – where we play lots of different characters, which is, you know, something people expect from us – and so we’re just going to start writing it, and if we feel it’s good and we want to share it with people, we’ll ask if anyone wants to put it on TV."

The pair will have to be careful of any new scripts after their previous comedy sketches didn't age well.

Last year, Little Britain and Come Fly With Me - another comedy by the pair which aired in 2010 - were removed from BBCiPlayer, Netflix and BritBox.

The programmes caused an outcry and complaints due to characters the comedic duo portrayed.

Characters included David dressing up as an overweight black woman called Desiree, while Matt donned a disguise to play a black airport coffee seller Precious.

The sketches were deemed offensive after the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests.

Campaigners also laid into the show for various other characters.

Throughout the series, viewers were introduced to characters which poked fun at gay people, transvestites and people from a working class background.

Matt, 47, has previously agreed that the show quickly became outdated and said society has hugely moved on since they first created it.

"I wouldn’t make that show now," he said.

"I wouldn’t make those jokes about transvestites. I wouldn’t play black characters."

David went on to discuss Britain's Got Talent with Jonathan Ross.

He revealed that he'd been informed Simon Cowell is returning to the show after it was cancelled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

David added: "It’s probably been good for the audience, quite nice to have a break and then you have a bit of a comeback."
