David Walliams admits Britain's Got Talent could be postponed again in 2022

David Walliams has admitted Britain’s Got Talent could be postponed or cancelled again in 2022 because it’s “an uncertain world”.

The show has booked the London Palladium from January 17 for four days to begin filming a new series having cancelled it this year.

But judge Walliams admitted he is unsure if it will get the go ahead.

He said: "We're meant to be coming back in January. We're going to start filming the auditions in January and February, all being well. But obviously, it's a bit of an uncertain world, which is why we had to cancel the series this year.

"I say we, they cancelled it. I would've quite happily done it as long as we could've kept everyone safe.

"But I think because of the nature of the show, it involves so many people, I just think there wasn't a way to do it that was safe. It was sad, but we couldn't do it."

Asked who his all-time favourite BGT winner is, he said: "I think the first year I did it Ashleigh and Pudsey won it. It was just so wonderfully joyous and bonkers. And it was really sweet because it was so genuine.

"It wasn't like someone who had tried to be successful and hadn't quite managed it and was having a go on this show. It was like, 'Oh, she's a sweet girl who loves her dog and just made everyone happy.' It's so silly, why is dancing to The Flintstones with a dog so entertaining?

"You don't know why, but for two minutes you would completely forget about everything that was wrong in the world and just enjoy watching this dog dance. That's the joy of Britain's Got Talent. And I love that anything can win - it doesn't have to be a singer or a dancer, it could be a dog."

Speaking on The Mike Hosking Breakfast show in New Zealand Walliams was also asked about his comedy series Come Fly With Me which has been criticised in recent years as he and Matt Lucas used blackface make-up in some sketches.

They apologised in 2020 and Walliams has also said he would "definitely do it differently" in today's cultural landscape.

Hosking said he had seen some of it recently and laughed and asked whether someone laughing at Come Fly With Me in 2021 is a "morally bankrupt person", but Walliams said: "No, it's different, culture moves on. We find different things funny and other things become a little dated. It's just the way it is.

"I find myself often watching old movies and thinking, 'Oh, you wouldn't do that now.' It doesn't necessarily mean that thing is not valid, not in my mind, it just means it would be a bit different if you did it now.

"I don't think that's really a problem. That's always been the case hasn't it?

"I remember growing up watching Humphrey Bogart movies as a kid and understanding that they, the way he behaved to people, women especially, and just thinking that was weird because it was now the 1970s and 80s and that way he behaved with women in the 1940s now seemed very, very strange and wrong. But somehow you could still watch the film and understand that."
