West Brom manager search rumbles on as David Wagner set for European job

David Wagner will not be taking up the manager's post at West Bromwich Albion.

The ex-Huddersfield Town chief was the bookies' favourite and considered to be the front-runner for the Hawthorns job, which is available after Sam Allardyce's decision to leave following their relegation from the Premier League.

But Wagner is now set to take up another role elsewhere in Europe, after the Albion board queried his desire for a promotion push in England.

Sky Sports claim that Wagner wants to be closer to his family in Germany and that he is poised to land the manager's job at Swiss club BSC Young Boys.

It is a blow to Albion, who are now having to look elsewhere in their search.

Former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was a strong contender but Albion's owner Guochuan Lai was said to be put off by the way in which Wilder departed United earlier this year.

Wilder, who dragged his boyhood club from mid-table in League One to a top-ten finish in the Premier League, was considered the number one target.

But Lai was deterred by the strained relations Wilder had with the Blades' ownership - something that ultimately led to his exit.

Another contender, Lincoln City boss and former Baggies' player Michael Appleton, was ruled out of the running after Birmingham Live reported that Lai was not willing to pay compensation to the Imps.

Wagner is expected to be confirmed in his role in Switzerland by the weekend. Young Boys are the defending league champions, having won last season's title by a 31-point advantage.
