David Wagner joins the race for the West Brom vacancy after Sam Allardyce decision

David Wagner has joined the race for the West Brom vacancy but Chris Wilder remains favourite.

Relegated Albion are looking for a new boss after Sam Allardyce confirmed he will leave the club.

Allardyce, 66, has quit after being unable to keep the club in the Premier League following his arrival in December.

Albion finish their season at Leeds on Sunday and Allardyce is recommending a younger boss to work at The Hawthorns, which has Chinese owners.

Wagner, 49, is now in the frame too after previously taking Huddersfield into the Premier League in 2017 and keeping them up at the first attempt.

His reign from November 2015 ended in January 2019 before Town were subsequently relegated and he is now out of work after a spell in charge of Schalke until last September.

Wagner would be available for no compensation like Wilder,53, who left Sheffield United in March after five years.

He took the Blades all the way from League One to the Premier League.

He was named LMA Manager of the Year in 2019 after promotion and then guided the Blades to ninth in the top-flight.

Allardyce's successor will have funds for a transfer spree but it is set to be money generated from sales as the club's owners operate on a self-sufficient model.

Star Brazilian Matheus Pereira, 25, who has 11 goals and six assists, is set to be sacrificed while England keeper Sam Johnstone, 28, only has one year left on his contract and will be sold.
