David Wagner and Dan Petrescu in Celtic manager bid as duo 'put names forward'

David Wagner and Dan Petrescu have reportedly put their names forward for the vacant Celtic job - but the Romanian insists he's not fit to work anywhere at the moment.

The Parkhead club are looking for a new manager after Neil Lennon tendered his resignation, with his departure confirmed on Wednesday morning.

Assistant John Kennedy has been appointed as caretaker but the hunt is very much on for a permanent successor.

Former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has been heavily linked with the role, and is among the bookies' favourites.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke and his Belgium counterpart Roberto Martinez have also been linked, as has former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.

According to the Daily Mail both Wagner and Petrescu have thrown their hats into the ring to be appointed as Lennon's replacement.

Former Huddersfield manager Wagner is looking to rebuild his reputation after a disastrous spell at Schalke 04 which saw him win just 12 of his 40 games in charge.

And Petrescu needs no introduction to Celtic fans after masterminding a shock win for Cluj in the 2019-20 Champions League qualifiers.

The Romanian took over at Turkish club Kayserispor in January but his contract was terminated by mutual consent this week, citing family reasons.

And that could be a barrier to him taking over at Celtic immediately as Petrescu insists he can't work anywhere at the moment.

He told Pro TV: "I have a personal issue and I had to stop my adventure here.

"I have to go.

"The owner was understanding, we remain on very, very good terms.

"The team is in a good place right now, not in a relegation position.

"I have a personal issue and can't really coach anywhere right now."
