David Turnbull faces ban as Celtic star's Aberdeen swipe receives red card verdict

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull could be handed an SFA ban after a swipe at Aberdeen star Dylan McGeouch.

Leigh Griffiths came off the bench to rescue the Hoops with seconds left to salvage a point at Aberdeen and cancel out Lewis Ferguson’s opener.

However, that wasn't the full story as Turnbull was shown a yellow for a fiery clash with McGeouch in the closing stages of the game.

Turnbull was penalised for a foul on McGeouch and responded by upending him in front of Collum, who chose to book the 21-year-old.

Despite being carded for the flashpoint the midfielder could still face action, as proven by Alfredo Morelos' SFA charge earlier this season for a tussle with Dundee United's Mark Connolly.

The Rangers striker was booked by referee Steven McLean for catching the Irishman in the face with his forearm in the 12th minute of his side's 2-1 win at Tannadice.

However he was subsequently charged with violent conduct and accepted a two game ban.

Analysing the incident on BBC Sportscene, host Steven Thompson put it to James McFadden he may have been "lucky" not to be sent off.

Pundit McFadden responded: "I think he was, but Willie Column is right there…

Thompson added: “Normally Willie has the red card out his pocked like Usain Bolt.”

McFadden said: ”I think David does go to have a kick and then sweeps Dylan McGeouch. He’s taken a huge risk.

“I don’t buy into this he’s not that type of player stuff, but I think it sums up Celtic that it’s the most composed player that loses his cool at something that is uncharacteristic.

“I think you are running a huge risk doing that in front of the referee."

Dons boss Stephen Glass also claimed that Jonny Hayes should have been handed a penalty after he was hauled down by Callum McGregor in the box.

However, McFadden didn't agree.

He said: "It’s the old cliche. I think he has too much time.

"He takes a couple of bad touches, but you have to give credit to Callum McGregor for not giving it up.

"A lot of people say Celtic ’s season is petering out, it doesn’t matter, well it matters to Callum McGregor."

When pushed on the foul by host Stephen Thompson, McFadden added: “I can see how he [Stephen Glass] is looking for it, because he is asking the same thing as you, how does Jonny Hayes get caught? Then he stumbles over.

“If it was me I would be looking for it, but for Jonny Hayes he has to go across Callum McGregor, he is running in a straight line. He goes in a straight line which allows Callum McGregor to get back round the other side. I think it’s good from McGregor in the end.”
