David Turnbull earns Celtic icon comparison as midfielder's 'elegance on the ball' pinpointed as tell tale sign

In-form David Turnbull is in the same mould as Celtic legend Paul McStay claims pundit Alan Rough.

Turnbull's brilliant strike was enough to see off Aberdeen on Wednesday night as the 21-year-old continues to earn plaudits for his Hoops' performances.

His stand-out showings for Neil Lennon's men have led some to urge Scotland boss Steve Clarke to consider him for the Euro 2020 squad.

Former Parkhead goalkeeper told the PLZ Football Show that Turnbull's top form shows his similarities to Celtic Park heroes like McStay and Tommy Burns.

And he also reckons he offers something different from the other players in Clarke's squad ahead of the tournament this summer.

Rough said: “He has the same compose [as McStay] and he’s got the same kind of style.

"He is very elegant on the ball and can see a pass. I would put Tommy Burns in that category as well. I’m not saying he’s as good as them, all I’m saying as he looks like a similar player.

“It’s been a long, long time since I’ve seen any Scotland player get in around 18 yards and 22 yards and have a pop. He’s having a pop all the time and he’s not frightened to pull the trigger.

“I think that’s always good when you’re stickers aren’t getting marked very tightly.”
