David Turnbull 'better' than Celtic back-up role and 'doesn't let anyone down' says Frank McAvennie

Frank McAvennie believes David Turnbull is a much better player than his current Celtic back-up role.

The Hoops hero is a big fan of the midfielder and reckons he brings something different to the team when he is involved. Ange Postecoglou has a wealth of options in the middle of the park with the preferred selection at the moment coming in the shape of skipper Callum McGregor as the mainstay and a combination of Aaron Mooy, Reo Hatate and Matt O'Riley.

That has limited the game-time of the former Motherwell man with most of his 17 Premiership appearances this season coming from the bench. In total he has featured 24 times in all competitions and netted three goals and provided five assists. He could be handed a role in the Scottish Cup clash at home to Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton with the Hoops boss set to make changes for the home tie.

Speaking to Football Insider, Macca said: “I like David Turnbull, he brings something different but he has not got the pace.

“I think [Reo] Hatate is a world beater. Apparently [Tomoki] Iwata is better than him. [Callum] McGregor is just cruising. [Matt] O’Riley has been hot and cold recently. There is competition.

“If Turnbull wanted to move somewhere I think the fans would be ok. He is just a back-up at the moment and he is really a better player than that.

“When he comes into the midfield he does not let anyone down but he is not going to be a starter. I think he is too good to be there.
