David Tennant says he was almost cast as James Bond over Daniel Craig

David Tennant has revealed he was almost cast as James Bond instead of Daniel Craig, but the talented actor only realised his chances recently.

Craig, 54, gained international fame playing the secret agent James Bond in the film series, beginning with Casino Royale in 2006 and in four further instalments, up to No Time to Die 2021.

Despite Daniel being chosen for the epic role in the first 2006 flick after Irish actor Pierce Brosnan hung up his 007 boots, David was secretly in the running to be cast as the next James Bond - unbeknownst to himself.

The Doctor Who actor only realised the amazing opportunity recently however, when a director told him producers Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G. Wilson had put him on a list of potential 007s.

During an appearance on the Acting For Others podcast, the actor explained: "I worked with a director recently who had worked with the Broccolis who was like, "Yeah, you were on the list that time."

"I was like, "What time? What are you talking about?" He went, "Yeah, the last time." I suppose it must have been Daniel Craig, before that I would have been a child.

"I think it was quite a long list and I don't think I was ever near the top of it. But apparently so," he added.

While being the next James Bond wasn't on the cards for David back in 2006, he did mark TV history by playing the 10th Doctor Who between the years of 2005 and 2010.

It comes after it was recently revealed that James Bond producers are searching for an actor to sign up for a 12-year run when they eventually settle on who should be the next 007.

Producers are eager to bring about a 'reinvention' of the British Secret Service agent character, and they need an actor who is going to truly commit to the role.

The hunt is on for the next 007 right now, though producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson recently admitted that the search was still in its early stages.

Speaking to Variety, Barbara explained: “The thing is, it’s going to be a couple of years off and when we cast Bond, it’s a 10, 12-year commitment.

"So, he’s probably thinking, ‘Do I really want that thing? Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it].”

Michael added: “And he was in his early 30s at the time."
