David Tennant makes cheeky SNP finances jibe on Have I Got News For You

David Tennant took aim at the SNP finances during his recent hosting stint on Have I Got News For You.

The Doctor Who actor was joined on the BBC show by regular team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton, as well as guests comedian Lucy Beaumont and broadcaster Richard Osman. As the group discussed the latest headlines from across the week, including Prime Minster Rishi Sunak's battle to improve numeracy across the nation, the conversation soon turned to the SNP.

After poking fun at the PM's plans to improve numeracy and enforce maths across the school curriculum, Tennant asked: "Which Scottish politician might be arrested this week?"

Hislop quipped in response: "I presume you're assuming that Nicola Sturgeon might be arrested."

Tennant replied: "I'm assuming nothing. It's just a speculation."

The Good Omens actor sarcastically added current First Minister Humza Yousaf had said "he knows nothing - and everyone believes that".

Beaumont then chipped in, leaving the audience in stitches: "It's all gone quite sexy though, isn't it now, the SNP? With like lies, police uniforms. I'm interested now. Simply because Happy Valley is finished."

While the audience roared at the comparison, Tennant added that more than eight million adults have the numeracy skills of a nine-year-old, and joked: "Not great. Good enough to be SNP treasurer, however."

Elsewhere in the show, Tennant was roasted by the guests after his close friend Michael Sheen phoned in to help with the pronunciation of a Welsh town. After Sheen's brief appearance, they all heaped praise on the actor.

"He's very good isn't he, Michael Sheen," Richard Osman joked, while Tennant responded: "Ah, he's alright."

Osman continued: "You know what, anything he's in, he carries. Don't you think?" As the audience roared, Merton replied: "No, he does. I mean, he's the actor of his generation."

Beaumont added: "Do people in Scotland like you as much as people in Wales like him?"

Tennant leaned back in his chair speechless while the audience was in fits of laughter around him.
