David Tennant left ‘embarrassed and on the floor’ after sustaining painful injury filming Rivals

David Tennant has revealed he was left “embarrassed and on the floor” after injuring himself during a sex scene for the hit Disney+ drama Rivals.

The 54-year-old actor, who stars as Tony, Lord Baddingham in the Jilly Cooper adaptation, told This Morning hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley that a love scene went unexpectedly wrong.

“Yes I did,” he explained. “I was launching myself onto a wooden bed, but unfortunately my knee collided with the bed frame in a rather unfortunate way. Not very sexy.”

Shephard joked about whether Tennant now uses a stunt double for intimate scenes.

Tennant laughed: “You can never quite tell when you are going to fall over and embarrass yourself, can you?

”But you certainly don't want to do it when you're wearing a modesty pouch.”

The second series of Rivals, based on Cooper’s bestselling Rutshire Chronicles novel, dives into the ruthless world of 1980s British television, where power struggles unfold in boardrooms and bedrooms alike.

In May, it was announced that the show would return with an extended 12-episode second series.

Tennant joins an ensemble cast including Aidan Turner, Victoria Smurfit and Emily Atack.

Danny Dyer will also return to play businessman Freddie Jones for which he won the British Press Guild Award for best actor and the RTS Television Award for supporting actor.

Throughout the fast-paced and emotionally charged first series, Dyer’s character was seen to have a slow-burn romance with Lizzie Vereker, played by The IT Crowd’s Katherine Parkinson who was nominated for a Bafta TV Award for supporting actress.

Dame Jilly, executive producer and Rivals author, said of the upcoming series, which began filming in April: “I’m utterly sex-static filming for the second season is upon us.

“I’m delighted to be able to work with them again and for everyone to see what further mischief they all get up to!”

The first series of Rivals was released in October with eight episodes and received six nominations across the Bafta TV awards, along with a nod in the memorable moment category, for the moment Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Sarah Stratton (Atack) were caught playing naked tennis.
