David Tennant and Catherine Tate pictured as Doctor Who filming begins in London

David Tennant and Catherine Tate have been pictured in London filming for the upcoming series of Doctor Who.

It was only announced last week that one of the most loved Doctor Who pairings reunited for a storyline that is set to be released in 2023.

It will coincide with the show's 60th-anniversary celebrations.

David, 51, began his role in 2005 the Doctor with his final episode airing on New Year's Day in 2010.

Catherine, 52, played his companion Donna Noble and left in an episode called Journey's End in 2008.

And now, in first look pictures, the duo were spotted filming on set in Camden, north London.

They were seen preparing for scenes at a coffee shop outside the popular clothing store Cyber Dog.

Catherine was all smiles as she arrived on set wearing black jeans, white trainers, a white sweater and a beige coat.

She also rocked black-rimmed sunglasses and a baseball cap and held onto a puffy green tote bag.

David, meanwhile, was pictured looking serious as he pushed Bernard Cribbins - who played Wilfred Mott, the grandfather of Donna - in a wheelchair.

He wore a navy jacket, a simple button-up shirt, and a grey tie as he filmed scenes with his co-stars.

Catherine, who arrived in a beige coat, later changed into a green coat as she walked alongside David for the scene.

One picture showed a dramatic moment in filming where the coffee stand bursts out in flames while people ran.

Another showed a crew member standing on a letter as he checked the Tardis was looking right for the scene.

The black sign was seen at the top displaying the words 'police public call box' in white lettering.

Catherine and David's return was announced last week, with showrunner Russel T Davies sharing his excitement online.

"They’re back! And it looks impossible - first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?" he said.

"Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback.

"The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime."

Earlier this month, it was announced that actor Ncuti Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the star of Doctor Who with Davies returning as showrunner, having left in 2009.

Gatwa becomes the 14th Time Lord on the popular science fiction show, and the first person of colour to play the lead role. It is unclear how Tennant and his return will fit in at this stage.
