David Silva 'set to become David Beckham's marquee signing for Inter Miami'

Manchester City icon David Silva is set to become the first marquee addition for David Beckham's new Major League Soccer team Inter Miami, according to a report.

The Independent claim that Silva, who will leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season after a decade in Manchester, is being lined up by Beckham in order to tap into and engage south Florida's large Hispanic community.

Beckham is desperate to get the local population on board as he looks to build the team from scratch, and hopes that a world-renowned Spanish-speaking star such as Silva would fit the bill.

Silva was part of the Spain squads that won the European Championships in 2008, the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championships again in 2012, while the former Valencia star is known around the world for his achievements in English football with City.

He will walk away from the Citizens when his contract expires in the summer, although should he move to Miami he would miss the first three months of the 2020 MLS season, which begins in March.

When he announced he'd be leaving in the summer, Silva - who signed a one-year contract extension this year - said: "10 years for me is enough. It’s the perfect time for me.

“Initially, City were talking about two years, but I decided to sign another one, so I finished at 10 years. It completes the cycle.

"It’s a nice round figure. I can never see myself playing against City for another team. So 10 years – that’s it.”

It was claimed back then that Silva would finish his career back home in Gran Canaria with Las Palmas, although they are currently in Spain's second tier.

“I would like to do that, but I don’t know,” he said.

“Football changes. Who knows? But I would love to finish my career here in Las Palmas.

"It depends on the team and the players. I cannot come here to play in the Second Division with this team.”
