David Silva linked with David Beckham's Inter Miami as Manchester City star 'set' for MLS switch

Manchester City midfielder David Silva is reportedly closing in on a surprise move to Inter Miami when his contract expires this summer.

Despite his 34th birthday looming in January, the Spaniard has remained one of Pep Guardiola's key performers, appearing on six occasions this season and registering five assists.

His days with the Premier League champions are numbered, however, after he announced in the summer that he will be leaving on a free when his current deal expires in July 2020.

There has been no official announcement yet where his long-term future lies, with the midfielder focusing on his football for the time being, but a report has suggested that David Beckham may have a pivotal role to play in his next move.

The former Manchester United man is heading an ambitious MLS project that will see his 'Inter Miami' franchise join the league next season.

According to The Express , he sees Silva as the potential face of the brand, and the midfielder is 'set' to sign up as the outfit's marquee stars.

MLS rules allow for clubs to sign three players over and above their limited salary cap, a regulation nicknamed 'the Beckham Rule' after it was established in anticipation of LA Galaxy signing the former England man back in 2007.

With Inter Miami not having yet signed anyone that would require it, with just four players in the door, the opportunity is there for Miami to spend big on up to three major stars ahead of their debut campaign.

Silva would be one if Beckham was to bring him in, but other ambitious names have been touted in connection with the fledgling outfit.

Lionel Messi, currently embroiled in uncertainty over his future at Barcelona , was tenuously linked with a move, as Beckham aims high with his recruitment.

Real Madrid's James Rodriguez was also mentioned earlier in the summer, although it seems unlikely both he and Silva would be brought in given the positional overlap.
