David Schwimmer settles 'we were on a break' debate - but answer might upset Friends fans

"We were on a break!"

Those five words are said, shouted and muttered countless times throughout the ten seasons of Friends by Ross.

The phrase follows the crumbling of his relationship with Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and subsequent one night stand with Chloe, the girl from the Xerox place.

When Rachel discovers that the pair slept together, she is devastated and feels betrayed, but Ross argues that it doesn't count as the pair were on a break.

It's been 25 years since the show first aired and still today, what with it currently streaming on Netflix, fans continue to debate whether or not they were on a break.

But it seems David Schwimmer, who played Ross, has very strong opinions on the matter.

The actor joined The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon recently and was asked to settle the debate once and for all.

Did Ross cheat on Rachel or were they broken up at the time?

The 53-year-old answered: "People are so passionately divided on whether or not [Ross and Rachel] were 'on a break'."

He added: "Yes, it’s not even a question, they were on a break."

Well there you have it folks - though we're sure his response is bound to upset a few fans.

As well as settling the debate, Schwimmer also spoke about the upcoming Friends reunion, revealing a few more details.

He told Fallon that he and his co-stars might be able to film the one-off special in mid-August if it is deemed safe to do so amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"It’s supposed to happen maybe in August, the middle of August, but honestly we’re going to wait and see another week or two if we all determine it’s really safe enough to do," he said.

"And if not, then we’ll wait until it’s safe."
