David Roback dead: Mazzy Star co-founder has died aged 61

David Roback, the co-founder of 90s band Mazzy Star, has died aged 61.

His death has been announced by a representative for the band, with the cause of death still to be announced.

Roback was a producer and multi-instrumentalist who co-founded Mazzy Star alongside Hope Sandoval.

Before that, he was a member of bands such as Rain Parade and Opal as he became a key figure in the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene, which spearheaded neo-psychedelia at the time.

Roback released one album with Rain Parade before quitting the band saying that he had a 'sense of limitations' by being with them.

He moved to Berkeley and New York in the mid-1980s, where he hooked up with Dream Syndicate bassist Kendra Smith.

They founded Opal but Smith abruptly left during a tour, where they were supporting The Jesus & Mary Chain.

Roback brought in Hope Sandoval as her replacement, with whom he would later form Mazzy Star with.

Their first album together as Mazzy Star was She Hangs Brightly, which was released in 1990.

They followed this up three years later with So Tonight That I Must See, which featured what would be the band's biggest hit in 1993, Fade Into You.

As well as producing their albums, Roback also co-wrote all Mazzy Star songs with Sandoval.

They made a comeback in 2013 with the release of their fourth album Seasons Of Your Day, which was the first full-length offering in 17 years.

Mazzy Star released their final offering, Still EP, in 2018.
