David Pollack recalls painful 2003 Georgia loss at LSU on ESPN College GameDay

ESPN College GameDay is set up at LSU today to prepare for the big game tonight between the Tigers and Florida Gators.

Tiger Stadium at LSU is the toughest place to play in college football. It’s an atmosphere that you just cannot find anywhere else.

And Georgia great David Pollack remembers it firsthand.

While on the GameDay set, he and Kirk Herbstreit discussed Georgia’s 17-10 loss at LSU in 2003.

Kicker Billy Bennett had a day to forget, going 1-4.

“I remember College Gameday came when Georgia played LSU (in 2003),” Herbstreit said. “I picked Georgia, and I was confident that (David) Pollack and Georgia would win, and they had a kicker named Billy Bennett.”

“Seriously?” Pollack responded.

Herbstreit carried on: “I’m getting yelled at, (fans) cussing at me, and I’m like, “can Billy Bennett make a field goal?’”

Pollack answered.

“I’ll never forget Coach Richt came in after the game, and was like “Hey, man. We’re going to need Billy (Bennett) the rest of the season, and make sure you don’t say anything negative,’” Pollack said. “You all know me, right? First thing out, ‘What do you think about Billy Bennett missing field goals? You’re a kicker. You kick. Make your field goals.’ Oh my god.”

That would be one of Georgia’s two regular season losses, with the other coming to Florida. Georgia would eventually lose to LSU again in the SEC Championship.
