Guardian Media Group (GMG) is expected to appoint David Pemsel to the role of chief executive in an announcement as early as Thursday.

Pemsel was promoted to deputy chief executive in 2013 from his position as chief commercial officer.

A former ITV marketing director, he has worked at Guardian News and Media since July 2011 and has been involved in recent years in commercial expansion overseas.

It was announced in January that Andrew Miller was to stand down after almost five years as chief executive of GMG, during which time the company behind the Guardian and Observer newspapers and theguardian.com has expanded into the US and Australia and increased digital revenues.

Katharine Viner was appointed in March as the new editor-in-chief of the Guardian, the first woman to run the newspaper in its 194-year history.

Previously deputy editor of the Guardian and editor-in-chief of Guardian US, she took up the role in the summer from Alan Rusbridger, who stood down after 20 years.
