Former Leeds United manager David O’Leary has said that Marcelo Bielsa should concentrate on bringing a ‘top-class’ striker to Elland Road ahead of their Premier League return.
The Whites completed their promotion to the top division for the first time in 16 years on Friday evening thanks to Huddersfield Town beating West Brom 2-1.
It got better for Leeds the next day, with Brentford’s 1-0 loss against Stoke ensuring that Leeds will finish the season as Champions.
Bielsa’s men celebrated victory in style on Sunday, recording a 3-1 away win over Derby County thanks to second-half goals from Pablo Hernandez, Jamie Shackleton and an own goal from Matthew Clark.
Ahead of their return to the Premier League next season, Leeds are likely to look to strengthen in the upcoming transfer market, and speaking on TalkSPORT, O’Leary has highlighted the position where they should strengthen first.
“I was so proud to manage them, they’re a brilliant club,” he said.
“They’re in great hands with the owner. They are spending money wisely and it’ll be fantastic to see Bielsa up there. He will know [where to spend money].
“Patrick Bamford has done great, but another centre-forward will be very important. People behind the scenes are good and they won’t get carried away, I’d like to see a top-class centre-forward.”
Bamford has been the first-choice striker for Bielsa throughout the season.
The 26-year-old has found the net on 16 occasions in the Championship this campaign and will be hoping to have an impact in the Premier League during the 2020/21 season.
